IT Teams

The Division of Information Technology (IT) is led by the Interim Chief Information Officer, Dr. Connie Schaffer. IT is staffed by 70 full-time and approximately 30 student employees. IT collaborates with other divisions and units for comprehensive information technology planning on EMU's campus, and is a member of several Professional Associations.

In April 2001, President Kirkpatrick announced the reorganization of campus information technology units into a single Information and Communications Technology (ICT) division under the direction of a Chief Information Officer. By late 2001 the unit began the migration into a new organizational structure. In developing the organizational design, ICT focused on the Malcolm Baldrige principles for excellence in education to implement an integrated organization that strives to provide continuous improvement in service-value for the EMU community, improved education quality, and enhanced organizational effectiveness.

Seven Primary Functions

The IT organization model is designed to take advantage of self-managed work teams, project management, and cross training. The functions below are organized in a concentric structure indicating the highly relational nature and team focus. Each team circle is a customer of and service provider to the other. Consequently, each group operates as a collaborative and cooperative team.

Academic Technology and Computing Services The staff in this group perform first line support. The group includes: Instructional Technology, Computer Labs, Computer Store and Help Desk.

CIO Team This group provides cross division organization and direction, administrative support for communications, finance, and human resources within the division. Staff in this group may serve as project team leaders, team members, or independent agents.

Enterprise Application Services This group supports the core ERP and peripheral systems. This team is comprised of Application and Process Services, Portal Support Services, and Database Services.

Network and Systems Services This is the "backroom" team, serving the institution's core infrastructure. It is comprised of professionals in Networking, Systems, and Operations.

Policy This function coordinates and ensures that appropriate EMU/IT policies are developed, communicated, adhered to, and maintained.

Project Management This team provides the methodology, portfolio reporting, consulting, and mentoring for project management services.

Security This function coordinates and ensures that appropriate EMU/IT security policies are developed, communicated, adhered to, and maintained.

Organizational Model

Because of the organization's strong team orientation, the organizational chart is thought of in terms of the interaction between functions:
