Should you bring a computer to school?

Due to the fact that Eastern Michigan University maintains several computing facilities for general student use, students living on campus are not required by university policy to own a computer. However, because not all computer labs are open 24 hours a day and because of the fluctuating use of computers in the labs throughout the semester, it is highly recommended that students living on campus bring a computer for their personal use. Getting Wired at EMU

• On-campus internet access

  Students living on campus should refer to "connect to the network/internet" for information about connecting their personal computer to Eastern Michigan University's ResNet service. Once students have successfully connected to the internet, they are urged to read the "practice safe computing" page for instructions on securing their computer from viruses and other malicious activity. Any problems or questions regarding internet connectivity should be directed to the IT Help Desk at (734) 487-2120.

• Off-campus dial-up access

  Those students who live off campus are given dial-up access to the internet at no additional charge. Information and instructions for dial-up access can be found on the front page of the IT Help Desk site.

• Cable television

  A cable television drop is installed in all campus dormitories. This service is provided through Comcast and all questions regarding cable television should be directed to Comcast at 1-(800)-COMCAST.

Getting accounts

• Activating your account and getting your password

  Your my.emich account allows students to register for classes as well as access email, calendars, and schedules. Detailed instructions for getting your my.emich account may be found at "get a my.emich account."

• Personal webpages

  Every student, faculty, and staff is provided with space on people.emich.edu to publish personal or institutional webpages. More information about these pages may be found here
