ResNetResNet is Eastern Michigan University's residence hall network service. ResNet uses dedicated Ethernet wiring to connect students to the university network and the Internet, and works much like DSL or cablemodem. Service is provided free of charge to students living in University Housing residence halls. Advantages of ResNetResNet Is ConvenientBecause ResNet uses Ethernet technology and dedicated wiring, no modem or phone line is required to connect. This means computers on ResNet are always online without tying up phone lines or having to manually dial-in. ResNet Is FastResNet is a 10Mbit/sec Ethernet network. This means that the connection over ResNet to your room will operate at theoretical maximum speed of 10MBit/sec, equivalent to 1.25 megabytes transferred per second. In any Ethernet network these theoretical speeds are unobtainable due to the way Ethernet networks work. Also, actual transfer speeds depend on the transfer rates of the opposite end. However, it should always be possible to download at speeds of 100 - 800 kb/sec from another computer on ResNet or within the Eastern Michigan University network. These speeds are substantially higher than the 7 kb/sec obtainable from the fastest 56kbit/sec modem. Getting ConnectedTo sign up for ResNet, you need to plug in, and then go through the simple registration process. Before you begin, make sure you have an email address, and you know your student number.
